XI. Other Matters
- World News - 57 people died and 16 were decapitated during prison riot in Brazil (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/officials-say-57-dead-16-decapitated-brazil-prison-riot-n1035991). At least 57 prisoners were killed by other inmates during clashes between organized crime groups in the Altamira prison in northern Brazil Monday with 16 of the victims being decapitated, according to prison officials. Para state prison authorities said a fight erupted around 7 a.m. between the Rio de Janeiro-based Comando Vermelho and a local criminal group known as Comando Classe A.
- Local News - Negros Oriental Police Chief Sacked Amid Back-to-Back Killings (https://www.rappler.com/nation/236745-negros-oriental-police-chief-fired-amid-killings). Amid rampant killings under his watch, Negros Oriental police chief Colonel Raul Tacaca has been sacked from his post on Wednesday, July 31. "This is to confirm that Negros Oriental provincial director Police Col. Raul Tacaca has been relieved from his position to give way to an impartial probe on possible lapses by his administration in light of several high profile killings in the province for the past several days," Philippine National Police (PNP) chief spokesman Brigadier General Bernard Banac said in a statement. Just between July 18 to 26, a total of 15 persons, including 4 policemen and a school principal, were killed in separate shooting incidents.
- UP News: #WeNeedDorms (https://mobile.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2400644659995894&id=166231563437226&_rdc=1&_rdr). The UP Diliman University Student Council calls for the Board of Regents to resolve the issue and accommodate the 320 students who are still on appeal
- Random News - Jeremy Lin in tears as he hits ‘rock bottom’ amid tough NBA free agency (https://sports.inquirer.net/359757/jeremy-lin-in-tears-as-he-hits-rock-bottom-amid-tough-nba-free-agency#ixzz5vGRaC6vE ). Basketball star Jeremy Lin broke down in tears during an emotional appearance in Taiwan when he described hitting “rock bottom” and feeling abandoned by the NBA as he languishes as a free agent. Lin — the first Asian-American to win an NBA title — was part of the Toronto Raptors team that won the championship last season but he was often benched during the playoffs as he struggled with his form.
II. Orsem Evaluation - Internals
- Giselle: Strength - good flow and sakto ng timing events, since may sobrang time and okay rin yung late start since na-overestimate yung late yung parts. Also, it didn’t rain so maayos yung amazing race. No major problems that day. According to other orgs, the org fair was okay even if it didn’t start simultaneously. It sill ended on time. Okay rin yung spacing ng orgs during the org fair. Also its nice na sabay yung STO during the org fair since they’re new and they are unaware of the orgs.
- Improvements - hatak more people and the gg’s should be briefed na it’s tiring talaga since they walk around UP and they should be prepared for that. Also proper estimation of food although we only had 10 extra.
- Vina: I think one of the strengths is that we had good contingency since we had cars ready in case it rains. With the freshies’ attendance, an improvement could be publicity so that we could market it to them more cause i think 2-3 pubs lang yung rinelease so they’re not super aware about it. Pero I get na medyo late yung pag-appoint ni Orallo so okay lang.
- Reg: ASEO commends yung whole OrSem. Actually, I also made pa-evals during plansem since I want to know their insights on OrSem and yun nga maganda yung flow and natuwa sila since maganda yung reaction ng freshies sa orgs. Concern nalang siguro, yung amazing race daw napagod sila sa mga freshies since napagod yung iba sa kaka-ikot. And concern ng isang org, kulang ng tubig since we didn’t serve water. So maybe per station dapat may water and maybe we can consider next time yung colleges near econ nalang para di masyado nakakapagod in a way. So that they would still be energetic when they get to the station. Like one org said tinatamad na yung freshies to do the task since they’re tired but overall its one of the best OrSems naman.
- Josh: Yeah this is the first OrSem na on time.
- Andi: Was there a program inside the classrooms?
- Giselle: Yes i assigned 2 core members to orient the GGs on what they were gonna do and they made a program flow which they sent. I told them (gg’s) rin they should prepare 2-3 activities just in case.
- Andi: I was wondering lang since iba iba games nila pero good idea it went well.
III. STO Evaluation - Sophomore Batch Reps
- Dylan: Strengths - we were welcoming sabi nila and the response was good and napapunta namin si Ma’am Kraft and she got to answer their questions. We were also able to obtain the database of classes that they needed and its good that they got to know each other and they were happy they got free food, minus the freshie who does not eat pork. Then na-involve yung core since they got to interact with them as well. We also got the room for free. Its a good idea na sabay yung STO sa Orsem
- Improvements - even if we ended on time, di nasunod yung flow since ma’am kraft extended like we had to remove the tour of econ and went straight to the org fair. Although, we did on-ground sensing and asked them if they wanted to tour so we still did after so we showed them starback, coop, etc. Konti rin yung attendees pero 50% naman. We forgot rin the token initially pero we got to buy. We also forgot to have opening remarks per sinalo ni reg. Also sana nag-focus si ma’am during registration since she focused on the curriculum.
- Vina: Job kasi yun ng RVC
- Dylan: I think council rin since i didn’t know what RVC was before
- Vina: We should release a pub on the process of reg?
- Josh: That’s RVC’s job kasi. We should just share RVC pubs in our page.
- Je: so far, they have released reg and waitlist guidelines
- Dylan: Friday yung call then wednesday is the deadline for filing then the pub of the candidates will be released at night.
- Orallo: Right there’s a minimum list? Yung mga g or sure na talaga, picture na kaagad.
- Dylan: Okay.
- Vina: I have a concern, di ba deadline of filing August 7 and the release of candidates is the same day rin. And then how about those who file the last minute and you have to double check everything?
- Dylan: Oh then there’s no pub that day. The next day na. But the next day is campaign period na.
- Je: That’s also my concern. If you wanna push through with August 7, you should make the deadline at 12nn para you can double check everything and orallo will take photos na then para by 8pm may pub na. Then they can campaign na at 12am. Kaya if you want to follow your original timeline, it should get posted on the night of August 7th.
- Dylan: Okay sige.
- Reg: Okay ganito, since short time, i think we should stand-by everything tapos by 12nn last submission na then 2pm-5pm, dapat alam ng candidates that they have to take photos. Then at 8pm yung pub, make sure we have a reasonable time lang.
- Andi: Also, we need to make sure kaya there’s a condition sa consti na freshie batch reps should be elected by a time (i think 2nd-3rd week after classes start) but since marami magrurun i don’t think you’ll have a problem
- Josh: Also, you have to remind them na you can’t say “Vote” and you can’t say anything like that. Since when photos are released, they have captions saying na “vote for me” and what not.
- Dylan: Can we get the room free?
- Jv: Di pa nagrereply si ma’am Kraft I can bump it tonight.
IV. ASEO Updates - Vice-Chair
- Reg: So yung ASEO prime (plansem), thanks for all those who came and participated. Late siya nag-start since I waited for the other orgs since I want to be complete when we start. We used 30 mins for the vision which is: “We, the ASEO, firmly commit ourselves to establish good internal relationships through transparent and constant communication in order to forward issues and economic principles and serve the interests of our constituents and the greater econ community.” so it’s more of fostering internal bond so we can serve the community. The house rules babagsakan pa lang since we are looking for a common time ng GA and for the calendar, na lock-out na yung mga events during the sem and no conflicts. One conflict lang, yung eventology ng ecosoc pero okay na. Org fair updates, Aug 13-15 yung start at 10am. You’ll see that classes in Econ start at 8:30 and they end at 10 so malaki influx ng people at 10. Ingress at 9am. Org Fair 101, council answer nalang since wala pa. Incentives, I will contact for free ice cream. There’s a program rin from 12-1, kahit short lang it’s just introducing the ASEO orgs, then the theme is (since di ako nagpa-anchor ng theme from them) celebrating diversity. I’m so happy rin na nalinis yung tambayan. The problem talaga the x-deals shouldn’t be stored there nang matagal like in Ecosoc ang daming na-store dun na expired na and na-hassle ko ata si Mang Tresio since we had to empty all the bottles. Then the rules and regulation for that na tackle na during ASEO prime. Also nakakadisappoint lang na not everyone helped out sa clean up (those who didn’t have shift) kasi nakatambay lang sa council booth but let’s just be conscious next time and help everyone out with their events. Last, ASEO update, sa statements yesterday, the reach was 31,000 for me, i’m so thankful for the ASEO orgs who participated with the call and siguro kaya rin siya lumaki kasi yung mga alumni ng orgs na bother rin sila and medyo naglibot rin ako sa UP kanina tapos kada daan ko they always ask what’s happening in Econ. Thanks council for also sharing the statement. Last last, may isang gustong magpamember na org which is the consulting group of Lance Cheng, we are talking na and their plan is to join the org fair so kailangan lang bagsakan sa execomm.
- Andi: Also during FWA, only me, giselle, and reg were the only ones there pero I get those with the shift and whatnot, pero those not doing anything, please come rin.
- Josh: yes, let’s remember to help each other out. Gets ko naman those with other commitments pero those who don’t have let’s help out.
V. Registration Updates - Secretariat
- Jv: Updates lang, tomorrow also extended siya so you guys need to sign up for shifts.
- Je: Di ba until friday?
- Je: The purpose now of having the council booth is the directory so how will we collect if wala tayo booth?
- Josh: So, yung suggestion ko through the batch reps nalang na ipost sa batch groups and ipa-edit nalang sakanila but the problem is those who are not part of the group. So we may request nalang a batch list from 101. Anyways, we will find a way nalang sa mga taong di naabutan.
- Jv: during reg, while the undergrads were updating the database, we also started building a database for masters so we have some of their contact details. Also, only 5 people rented lockers this semester so maybe we can pub it what do you guys think?
- Steph: Yeah we should and we should also ask them after we stamp sa booth.
- Vina: Yeah like bear forced us to offer a locker after we stamp them.
- Jv: Also, keep it down nalang sa booth since marami tayong warning from RVC.
VI. Freshie Election Updates - Sophomore Batch Reps
- Dylan: Mukhang madaming tatakbo. Di pa sure tho, pero minimum siguro 5-6. Nagpa-add na rin kami sa GC nila and nagparamdam na kami na Friday yung start of filing. Yung pub, i sent orallo a sample pub na for Friday. Yun lang.
- Vina: Kailan yung orientation ng tatakbo?
- Josh: Oh you also need to get the presentation of SEEB to show them the rules
- Je: If any freshie pala asks if they can post regarding elections, tell them to wait for the announcement of Friday since they might get a violation.
- Reg: I think,
VII. SE-Ning Updates - SAC
- Mikha: So Mia is gonna make artwork and marvin is gonna make the essay (minimum 4 lang naman 2 written and 2 visuals) so if no one submits I will tap my core muna.
- Josh: How about the Filipino Games?
- Mikha: I’ll meet pa my core!
VIII. STRAW Updates
- Andi: During the Org Fair, Gabbi sid usually maraming responses in Dear Straw during reg week so I released it na using the batch reps and wala namang responses so far. Also, i was supposed to put signs sa trash cans pero meron na pala so i’ll put no smoking signs nalang sa tamabayan. For the counseling updates, PsychServe is medyo not g for it since they have a partnership na with USC and they’re iffy pa with peer counseling since they don’t know the pros and cons. I heard in Eng, they have a similar program for peer counseling, and I talked to my friend na that’s from the OCG and before this week ends, I will go and inquire with them. Last, I met with my core they’re cute.
- Josh: How many?
- Andi: 13!
- Josh: I have a suggestion, ask the councilors from Diwa
- Andi: But midsem pa, pero I can do that naman rin. Also for the sign for no smoking who do I ask?
- Josh: The college sec tomorrow!
IX. Freshman Advanced Reg Evals - Secretariat
- Jv: Strengths - the preparation done for the event was done early, the flow was smooth, there were no problems naman during the event, and we adjusted accordingly when RVC said na wala nang form 5 distribution since everything was online. Also nabigay naman ng admin yung list of freshies so it was not hard making a group for them.
- Weaknesses - It was hard to contact some freshies since not all of them madaling hanapin in facebook so we had to guess add people and also not all freshies in the list were pushing through with UP sa end so we had to sort through it.
- Opportunities - for the next sec, continue lang preparing for events like these early since you’re coordinating with admin. Also, find ways to reach those who are not active in facebook so that they could still be reminded of events like these.
- Threats - the difficulty lang of being in contact with freshmen who are not active in facebook.
- Josh: Yeah super smooth nga yung reg and on time yung end so its good. Yung problem lang is we didn’t follow up with the freshies who didn’t get to go.
- Je: Since sobrang dami nilang binawas sa freshie reg, parang naging sobra tayo since there were times na we were just infront during the time. Like it wasn’t necessary for all of us to be there since na free up yung roles ng mga councilors (no more form 5a distribution)
X. GASC Updates - Econ Rep. to the USC
- Je: It was held in UP Tacloban where one of the issues they’re facing is that there were a lot of farmers being killed under Operation Kapanatagan by AFP and PNP. . And there have been more killings of farmers in negros occidental. What we discussed here was mainly the resolutions and the SR selection, we also reviewed the past GA stuff and then we had situationers and discussions. There was an Eastern Visayas and Tacloban situationer given to us as well as a talk given by Sarah Ilago about the role of the youth in the state The situationer not only discussed on the killings and human rights violations but also on their economy, like they were trying to shift to cacao but their main product is rice which is why they’re against the rice tariffication law. Also, we discussed Yolanda since wala pa yung tulong na hinahanap nila. There was also an end of term report from the OSR. What we are experiencing systemwide is the master development plan like in UP Baguio they have a museum that is being used to be a tourist spot, UP Davao there’s a sports complex that the students can’t used, so in-address yun during GASC. For the resolutions, we will do our best to support and campaign for these issues as well. If the upse community and the sesc has a different stand on the issues discussed last GASC, we will forward that.. Some issues include, junking of MDP, some were unit specific, red tagging issue, CHED memorandum 20, Econ related ones were contractualization and rice tariffication. Unfortunately, I didn't get to manifest during GASC. My flight was at 8:20 so I wasn't able to finish the resolution-building agenda. For SR Selections, Ice Punzalan was the one who was elected. Yung strength natin we were present since there was a lot of councils were not there but gets naman with the reimbursement system. Weakness siguro is that I lacked manifestations as our delegate sa SESC and since consensus building siya, we didn’t get to show our stand during the discussions and also my flight was early pala so I missed some parts of it. Opportunities naman, sana we have more than one rep for us.. Threat is how we could forward Econ’s perspective. Since ang hina naman if we just manifest “g with reservations” rather than we assert. And we should really be consultative with everything so we can manifest properly.
XI. Other Matters
- Vina: First, magpopost tayo ng electives primer, acad kit, and acad book catalogue on august 2 (internal for batch groups). I just wanna tell na the electives primer is updated since the last time it was updated during the term of Isla. Then our reach for the academic integrity is 44,000 so yay.
- Giselle: Grand-Pak is on friday na. Reg and I ordered food and since reg muna nagbayad. Yung budget for that is 4,500 and what I got in lutong bahay is 3,400 so I’m still thinking of what else to spend sa remaining.
- Josh: ilang pancit?
- Giselle: Good for 100 siya. Then this is each for shanghai and pancit.
- Andi: Better if more ulam.
- Giselle: I can add pandesal. Also, iba na yung prices ng excel file since 700 na yung pansit. So I need to think about adding since gipit.
- Je: Na pre-order mo na ba?
- Giselle: Yeah and we can order naman a day before if we need to add
- Vina: What if iluto nalang natin?
- Josh: Ah goodluck, so friday early morning magluluto tayo.
- Giselle: I think medyo bawas yung budget noong orsem since we didn’t pay for anything.
- Je: Sabi ni Jaro, you can re-allocate your money in a different event if sobra.
- Andi: Yeah you can shift it to other events.
- Je: But, my understanding of that is you can only re-allocate within the event and not carry over sa other event. Like if you need extra money for the event, you need to raise it or re-allocate the budget ng event for that. But what others understand is that you can re-allocate money with different events.
- Giselle: I only paid for food, pancit canton for amazing race, then I didn’t spend 1,155.
- Josh: We’ll ask him nalang if we can re-allocate money from orsem for the extra pancit and shanghai.
