Mitch: UP News: Despite the gray skies and rough roads, we march onward. This year’s UP Pride will be held on October 26 to 30 with the theme “Sama-sama, Pantay-pantay.” UP Pride 2020 aims to unite the LGBTQI community and other marginalized sectors in fighting for human rights and equality, and calling for stronger SOGIESC-based anti-discrimination protections within and outside the University, such as the SOGIE Equality Bill.

Finlit Evals c/o Edres
Emman: Thank you to everyone who attended the Finlit event in partnership with UPIC. For the strengths, we were really surprised by the turnout kasi 74 ‘yong attendees. All throughout the event, hindi siya bumaba ng 60. We were comparing it rin kasi sa Debate 101 wherein 92 registered pero 60+ attended, so we were expected something similar for Finlit. Another strength is that the speakers were really good. Maganda feedback nila sa evals lalo na ‘yong second speaker. Nabigay na rin kasi nila ‘yong talk na ‘to previously kaya they really know how to deliver it well. Thisis good rin kasi their topic is something new to our financial literacy talks talaga. Natuwa rin core ko kasi naging maayos preparations namin for Finlit kasi may system talaga kami kung paano namin pinagsabay ‘yong prep for both.
Weaknesses: Walang incentives kasi professors rejected on the basis of equity, since need ng internet for this, of course, and beyond class hours na ‘yong event. Another weakness, although minor lang naman ‘to, is that we finished 10 minutes later than planned. Nag-extend rin kasi ‘yong 2nd speaker and hindi siya nagre-respond sa mga pings namin for time.
Opportunities: I guess a good opportunity is that sustained ‘yong interest for financial literacy. In fact, attendees this year exceeded ‘yong number of attendees on the ground last year. Financial literacy is something everyone is very interested in, and every year may freshies who haven’t had the chance to attend these events but really want to.
Threats: Similar to the weakness, big threat rin talaga ‘yong inequitable nature of webinars kaya professors didn’t want to give incentives.
Attendants for the event: again, required kasi for council to attend at least one EdRes event or the partner event with Ecosoc. So lahat naman accounted for, and may isa tayong kulang, PM ko na lang siya later. Apart from that, okay na.
Andi: Any feedbacks or comments and suggestions? Thank you Emman!
STRAW Updates c/o STRAW-Sec
Third: Okay, so first I’m going to be talking about STRAW initiatives. The next big initiative that’s coming na is the Tuklas: An Advocacy Fair 2020. Again, it’s not really an event—it’s a pub series. For this initiative, we have 21 partners, wherein we will be sharing their pubmats on our page. Please ask your cores to share the album na rin kasi we really want to help these orgs get the publicity they need. A big shoutout na rin to my core kasi they have been very efficient when it comes to the preparations of these initiatives. I know we’ve had a lot of initiatives whether it be solely STRAW initiatives or initiatives done in partnership with other councilors. All throughout the first half of the sem, they have been very responsive and the success of our initiatives is really their doing.
Let’s move on to the STRAW Grievances now. So, as you all know, all of our grievances are academic grievances talaga. They’re more on specific courses and its course policies. Let’s start with Econ 131. for Econ 131, I talked to Yas kanina and she told me that ontipa lang sa class ‘yong nagfo-forward ng issues sa kaniya. As much as we want to talk to the professor na about the concerns of the class, it has to be a collective effort talaga eh. Majority of the class has to agree that there’s something wrong with the course policies. There are valid concerns rin kasi with regards to why some students don’t want to actually talk to the professor about certain issues, baka ‘yong iba mas preferred na ‘yong current setup over something else. Basta bottomline is that it has to be discussed within the class. Maybe the council members who are also taking 131 can tap your classmates to actually answer the forms Yas released.
Let’s move on to Econ 102 and 162. Okay, this is a bit tedious talaga kasi the classes have informed me naman that they’ve tried to air out their concerns to the professor. So kanina, we sent a position paper na along with the appeal letter of Econ 102 and 162 to the professor. We agree rin kasi that these classes have course policies talaga that are not as inclusive and the current setup is more prone to technical difficulties. We outlined there na rin the proposal of the classes. Thank you to the batch reps for coordinating closely with me. This is something decided by the class talaga. Unfortunately, the professor didn’t grant the appeal. She said lang that it’s unfortunate that the letter was belated and that the class has agreed to the protocols naman na. From our side, we don’t think that it’s late naman, kasi we had to exhaust all other means of resolving it within the class. Also, the letter is signed by the whole class talaga so they haven’t really agreed on the course policies like the professor said.
Andi: Reminder lang that if you have problems sa class, Plan Z dapat ang pag-contact sa admin. You should exert extra effort talaga in making sure that the concerns of the class is communicated to him/her para ma-gets nila talaga ‘yong concerns. I’ll talk to Ma’am Magno tapos we’ll see what next step we can take. Let’s see what happens tonight.
Third: Unfortunately, there’s a big chance talaga that the exams will push through tomorrow. Batch reps, maybe you can consolidate the issues during the exam mismo para you have tangible evidence that these examprotocols aren’t effective talaga.
Cami: From our end, we’ve had a mock exam last Tuesday. All throughout the call, we’ve been trying to tell her our concerns. She kept trying to end the call really quickly. As in parang if there are 3 seconds of silence, she’ll conclude the discussion na.
Mitch: ‘Yong other worry rin kasi is that 2 hrs na synchronous ‘yong exam, hindi namin kakayanin ‘yon. We’ve been asking her to extend ‘yong deadlines ng assignments and activities, or i-upload niya ng mga maaga ‘yong mga discussion notes kasi hindi talaga namin sila naaaral comprehensively. Minove niya one time ‘yong deadline pero after that week binalik niya ulit dati. So, dumating ‘yong exam na hindi namin master ‘yong mga topics.
Mario: Motion to extend by 2 minutes.
Cami: I second the motion.
Andi: I just wanted to add na rin that I was talking to Ma’am Magno. She suggested that we have a survey. This is an effort rin coming from admin. If the results show that majority of econ students don’t have enough resources talaga for these typesof setups, they have no chice but to discontinue it.
Mario: For that let’s add rin questions about how often you get disconnected during calls. Regarding ‘yong sinabi mo naman Mitch, TA dapat ‘yong tumutulong sa profs esp if they’re not that tech-savvy. Ganiyan kami sa 141, the TA does most of the technical stuff. Kaya baka you can ask your TA kung pwede i-upload ng maaga ‘yong mga videos or discussion notes.
Mitch: Pwede pero hindi lang siya nagre-reply.
Partnership Proposals c/o Ways and Means
Jaro: Last week napagkasunduan natin na magsstop muna tayo mag-accept ng partnerships. Heads up lang, may finorward ako sa inyo BRA: opportunities from JP Morgan and the NSTP Office for dissemination to our constituents, we can opt to not share it na lang muna kasi of course the students are focusing on the midterms, so baka hindi nila ma-appreciate ng buo ‘yong opportunities na ‘to.
I will be sending the PMS statement na on Mental Health Month. This is a joint partnership with UP CALSC and UP PMS. They’re asking if we are g to become a signatory. Heart react if g kayo. Within the day sana.
For donation drive, tomorrow we’ll be meeting with Paymaya. Right now, we have 7 org partners which is good kasi originally we were having a hard time finding partners. Okay na ‘yong number na ‘yon for us. We have corporate sponsors also. We have received the products from Amway, which are energy drinks. We have received the shampoos and conditioners from Dove na rin, it’s with my teammate already. We’re looking at distributing it by December.
Andi: Any questions?
Third: I just wanted to ask what happened to the company that offered extra publicity through a billboard?
Jaro: I was able to clarify that they were going to use the deed of donation for tax filing talaga. They told me they were going to clarify if our organization is clarified to receive the donation in the first place. Mayroong some form of certification kasi to make you qualified to give out deeds of donation. Doon kami nagtagal. Sa last call namin, it was clear na to me that since we’re not incorporated and we’re not for-profit hindi tayo qualified for that. We can’t do anything about it. It was a great opportunity sana kaso we wanted it to be a win-win situation as much as possible.
Andi: Buti na lang you were able to clarify that.
Jaro: I’d like to thank Emman rin kasi he has been very responsive sa mga partnerships natin. So for the information of the body, hindi na natin need mag-release ng UP Pride statement kasi ASEO released one na.
Andi: Pero we’re still releasing one pa naman right?
Emman: Yes, the council page will be changing its DP and ilalagay na ‘yong statement mismo doon sa caption.
Midsem Evals Calendaring c/o Chairperson
Andi: Looking at our polls, and majority talaga is November 5 and November 4. Hindi kasi kaya on November 4. So maybe those who said that hindi sila available on November 5 can speak up and state their reasons para we can deliberate on them lang. Third, can you help me pinpoint those who said they’re unable to attend on November 5?
Mitch: So ‘yong nanalo Wednesday and Thursday sa poll right. Ilang oras ‘yong midsem evals natin?
Andi: We’ll start ng 4 PM and end ng siguro mga 9 PM.
Mitch: I didn’t vote for November 5 pero since ‘yon naman ‘yong timeframe, I think pwede naman ako kasi if earlier, hindi talaga kaya.
Third: Okay, I think ako na next. November 5 kasi is my birthday kaya baka hindi talga ako available by that time. But since ‘yon naman ‘yong time, I think kaya naman. I’m changing my vote. Ang hindi pa ata nagvo-vote for November 5 ay si Yas and Shin.
Mitch: So ‘yon thank you sa mga sumagot ng midsem evals natin. So diba kasi sumasagot si Third, Emman, and Gia, and parang nung time na ‘yon may na-doble na mga questions. I edited it para mawalan ‘yong mga errors pero when I checked the forms, isa lang ‘yong nakalagay na response. I wanted to ask you guys sana if alam niyo kung paano mare-retrieve ‘yong mga answers ni Gia and ni Third kasi after editing, ‘yong kay Emman na lang ‘yong natira.
Third: Oh Mitch, hindi pa ako tapos sumagot.
Mitch: Okay! Kung si Third hindi pa pala sumagot, and if si Gia rin hindi pa, wala palang problem. Reminder na lang rin na October 30 deadline so by Saturday or Friday sana tapos na.
Andi: I’d just like to give some background, for midsem evals talaga we go to a house. We go through the external evals and may painuman and may sleepover. Pero siyempre we can’t sleepover now, and we don’t want it to be boring rin naman. May pa-fun activity on the end. First question is are you guys game to have an online dinner? You’re all g naman. Second question is are there any other games you want to play aside from Among Us?
Mitch: Baka we can play dares ulit like sa Plansem natin! Or ‘yong ginawa ni Third na may cropped faces na huhulaan.
Andi: Okay! I’ll take note of that. I’ll add Minecraft na lang rin as suggested by JC.
Other Matters
Third: Reminding you lang BRA of the quota for external evals. Please accomplish it by November 1. thank you!
Andi: Maybe you guys can ask help na rin from council members sa same batch niyo.
Mitch: Brig niyo na rin ‘yong survey form para ma-notify talaga everyone.
Mario: Update lang rin sa Dilgames, so it’s going to happen throughout the reading break. So, actually ‘yong ila-livestream na aprt ay ‘yong sa finals onwards na, so tiwala na lang.
Mitch: Paki-share ang ASEO statement on UP Pride 2020 sa mga hindi pa nakakashare. UP ETC and UP DebSoc gave their effort and of course our very own, Kyla Balita so please share it! Thanks Kyla!
Andi: Anymore concerns or issues you want to raise? Okay thanks everyone!
